In those 10 years we have seen women support, guide and encourage each other. Advice, ideas and discussions have taken place across the Tees Valley / North East as women share experiences and learn from each other.

To help build on this support network, we’d like to introduce the Assist Book Club.

Many of us don’t have time to read fiction books, and we understand it may not be a priority, therefore, we decided a book club that would inspire and motivate women was a great way to encourage some downtime while also gaining knowledge that will help us personally and professionally. This book club has been created, not only, as the perfect way to bring us together but to learn and share good practice.

As an author, I’m passionate about reading, but, as a woman in business, I’m drawn to books relating to self-development and personal growth. My favourite authors being Brene Brown, Marianne Williamson and Oprah Winfrey.

In the words of Oprah Winfrey:

“Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age three, and there discovered was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.”

We can learn so much from reading and we can learn so much from each other. By developing this book club, we will read books that will inspire and motivate us. We all have challenges in our businesses, and as women, it is commonly known we often have to juggle our businesses and our families. Creating a work-life balance has always been a must for me. So often, I read books from inspirational women. To be able to share this, and learn from, local supportive women is a gift we should embrace.

My current book is Becoming, by Michelle Obama. It’s quite a long book, however, it is a very inspiring book. She’s an extremely gracious woman, who tells of her family life and juggling her work. How she portrays her life she could easily be one of us; ensuring how she was home for her girls every night, how she put them to bed, how she balanced this with her own work and how her girls were her priority even when she became first lady, for example, having dinner together every night was a given.

Sometimes we question if we are on the right path? Personally, I believe whatever your passion is, that is your purpose … but there are challenges, hurdles, barriers … but it’s women like Michelle Obama who make us feel like we’ve got this.

Our local area is filled with inspiring women who lift each other up. This book club will endeavour to make this happen more so. Learning from each other is a great way to move our businesses forward. It is also a great way to enhance our own personal development.

We hope this book club will help women believe in themselves and move their businesses forward while networking with other supportive women.

In the words of, Gloria Vanderbilt:

“I’ve always believed that one woman’s success can only help another woman’s success.”

So, if you’d like to be inspired, encouraged and supported while sharing and learning, the Assist book club is definitely the place for you.

As I mentioned, we all have busy lives, hence the reason we have decided on a quarterly meet-up.  If you feel you don’t have time to read a book, you can opt to listen to the book that is chosen. Audible, by Amazon, is excellent, a monthly fee with a free downloadable book once a month. You can download the app making it easy to listen on your phone.

Hopefully, you can join us on the first meeting on Thursday 4th April, where we will discuss a few books and choose something that is of interest to us all.
